Lest IIM at Amritsar be lost for want of free land

On: 24 December, 2014

Amritsar : All Executive members & President of Amritsar Vikas Manch (Regd.) Principal Kulwant Singh Ankhi, demanded from S. Parkash Singh Badal Chief minister of Punjab, S. Sukhbir Singh Badal, President Shromani Akali Dal & Dy. CM Punjab  & DC Amritsar through a letter to provide a chunk of 200 acres land in 10-20 Km radius of Amritsar City to establish Indian Institute of Management (IIM). Amritsar Vikas Manch fears the sites proposed by Distt. Admn. at village Awan and Seron Bagha for establishment of iim may be rejected by the hrd inspection team. iim has been allocated to the holy city by Hon’ble sh. Arun Jaitely after continuous efforts and pursuance by Amritsar Vikas Manch. Govt. of Punjab is in search of 200 Acress of Panchayat Land so that it has not to spent any money but this huge chunk of land is available at village Awan Teh. Ajnala & village Seron Bagha Teh. Baba Bakala. Both these sites are at 40-50 Km. away from Amritsar and are in the remote and Backward area of Distt. Amritsar having no civic facilities. After a long period of 45 years, this prestigious institution is allocated to Amritsar after Guru Nanak Dev University which was established on 24 Nov, 1969. Institutions of National Level are established near the main cities.

Amritsar Vikas Manch fears that IIM may not meet the fate of World Class University declared in 2008 & S.E.Z. declared in 2004. Both these projects did not came into existence because Govt. of Punjab did not provide required land. Both these institutions could not came into existence due to callous attitude of Govt. of Punjab towards Amritsar when its attitude towards Mohali is very kind. Punjab Govt. has provided 300 Acress of land to Mohali Airport by purchasing this land at the Rate of Rs. 1.5 crore per acres & spent 450 crores.

Similarly 400 acress of land has been purchased by Punjab Govt. at Mohali for establishing Indian School of Business (I.S.B.), National Institute of Biotechnology & Nanotechnology. Land of value crores of rupees is leased to I.S.B. at only Rs. 70/- per annum. 1000 acres of costly land has been purchased by Punjab Govt. for Aero city & Eco city at Mohali. Now 1700 acres of land has been purchased at New Chandigarh for Medi-city, Edu-city & I.T. city. Similarly 2000 acres of land is being purchased near Ludhiana for Industrial Park.

All the projects established in Mohali are in or around the city. I.I.T. (Indian Institute of Technology) is near Ropar & Central University shifted from Amritsar to Bathinda is also near Bathinda city. Punjab Govt. borrowed Rs. 100 crore from Amritsar Improvement Trust which are not refunded till now. Besides this 400 crores from Amritsar Improvement Trust were siphoned to other cities. If the Punjab Govt. refunded this money to Amritsar Adm. then the required land near Amritsar can easily be acquired for IIM.

So Amritsar Vikas Manch demands from CM S. Parkash Singh Badal Dy. CM S. Sukhbir Singh Badal to consider and fulfill the demand of Amritsar Vikas Manch keeping in view the religious, historical & political importance of Amritsar. Punjab Govt. must show respect to glorious history of Amritsar & provide land within 15-20 Km radius of Amritsar city.
